“Junípero Serra and the Native Peoples of the Californias”

Rose Marie Beebe, Professor of Spanish Literature, Santa Clara University
&
Robert M. Senkewicz, Professor of History, Santa Clara University

This lively wife/husband team will present some of their research on the life and thought of the founder of the Alta California mission system based on their 2015 book Junípero Serra: California, Indians, and the Transformation of a Missionary.

For this presentation they will concentrate on the areas of Junípero Serra’s life that have proven, especially in California, to be the most discussed. Rose Marie Beebe’s extraordinary skills as a paleographer and translator assured the book accurately recounts the documentary record of Serra’s approach to the native peoples of both Baja California and Alta California, the dynamic between conversion and punishment, and the native people’s initial response to Serra and his fellow missionaries.
